Ann Foster was a confessed witch from Andover, whose confession is one of the most colorful of any in the trials. She told John Hale that she had ridden from Andover to a Salem Village witch meeting on a stick but that the stick had broken and given her a fall. She claimed to still be sore. When she was later asked to repeat this confession, she added that she always carried brad and cheese in her pockets, and how all the witches enjoyed a picnic before every meeting.Ann's colorful confession may be based on fear of George Burroughs and Martha Carrier, both of whom threatened to kill her for confessing to witchcraft. They had come to her in prison with an iron spindle and threatened to stab her for confessing her witchcraft and accusing them of corrupting her.
Ann Foster died in Salem Prison, December 3, 1692.
