Tituba was Reverend Parris' Caribbean Island slave, who had accompanied him to Massachutes from Barbados in 1680. Tituba was the first to be accused of witchcraft by Betty Parris and Abigail Williams. She made an elaborate confession when examined by magistrates, and described meeting the devil and invisibly tormenting the girls. This confession was crucial in escalating the witch-hunt, as it gave a semblence of credence to the girls' stories, and because Tituba herself soon began accusing others with the girls.
