
Mercy Lewis was
seventeen at the start of the witchcraft hysteria, and a servant
in the Putnam household. In March 1692 she joined Betty Parris, Abigail
Williams, Elizabeth Hubbard, and Ann Putnam in
having fits. With the support of these four and Ann Putnam Sr.,
she led the outcry against Martha Corey, and
was to remain one of the chief accusers throught 1692. Lewis had
come to live in Salem when she was fourteen, taken in by George Burroughs after witnessing the slaughter of her parents by
Indians in Casco, Maine.
